Warner Bros. has announced the fifth Matrix movie

Warner Bros. returns to the Matrix with the announcement of a fifth Matrix movie in development. This instalment will mark a departure from the series’ original directors, Lana and Lily Wachowski. Instead, Drew Goddard, known for his work on “The Martian,” will take over directing duties. Goddard will also pen the script and produce alongside Sarah Esberg from Goddard Textiles. Lana Wachowski, who directed the latest Matrix movie, “Resurrections,” in 2021, will serve as an executive producer.
The casting details remain undisclosed, leaving fans to wonder if Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. Recent expansions to the franchise, including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris and Priyanka Chopra, may also return.

While specifics of the plot are under wraps, Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production, hinted that the new story will expand the fantasy world while staying true to the series’ essence that made it iconic.
Ehrman expressed excitement about Goddard’s vision, stating, “Drew brought a fresh perspective to continue the Matrix legacy, respecting Lana and Lilly’s original vision while adding his own unique touch, based on his deep affection for the series and characters.”
Goddard, known for his Oscar-nominated work on “The Martian,” expressed his reverence for the original creators, saying, “The Matrix films profoundly impacted both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s remarkable artistry continues to inspire me, and I am honoured to contribute to their universe.”
“The Matrix,” which debuted in 1999, revolutionised sci-fi cinema and spawned three sequels: “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” in 2003, and “The Matrix Resurrections” in 2021. Despite being directed solely by Lana and receiving critical acclaim, “The Matrix Resurrections” struggled at the box office, largely due to its simultaneous release on HBO Max.
